Thanks for all of the information and personal experiences.

I wonder, is ClassicShaving the best place to pick up pastes? Also, how far do the pastes go? They are 5 gram syringes of product (I have heard that a minimal amount of paste is needed but I guess I am not that sure how much 5 grams of paste is !)

Also, I'll ask again about pasting the split leather side of the strop. How would that affect the usage of the paste? (The dry, unpasted split leather strops really smoothly and effortlessly).

Thanks for the input once again.

Classic will have most grit sizes needed at better prices than most on Amplex Diamond Compound. I have not tried any of the other brands so can't comment on their effectiveness or value.

The 5gr syringes go a long way on paddles with their smaller surface area but I imagine a full length hanging strop with the rough side leather would eat up at least one syringe. The paste is water based and the leather will draw the water from it upon contact making spreading a bit tough.

It will take 2 coats to dress a hanging strop with diamond paste I have found. First coat is applied liberally and well rubbed in with the finger. leave this to dry for a day or so then with wet fingers rub again till it chalks (dry to a powder) like emulsion. Apply the second coat straight after the you have finished the wetting, this ensures that the paste will not dry so quick as you apply it. You then let this dry for another day or so then repeat as before with the wet fingers but try not to over wet or move the paste to the edges but try to achieve an even film.
You must let the strop dry completely before you use the strop with a razor. First use will seem dissapointing but I found by using an old razor or cabinet scraper burnisher to run over it first ,smooths things out. If you have applied too much paste it will be sticky so wet and rub again till ok. If too little paste is used then a course feel to the stropping will be felt, though this will not harm the razor. Just apply a small amount more and repeat the process.

Thanks, Tony. I had a feeling that could be the case, but I have never tried any of this.
