Thanked: 0strop height
does it really matter much to have it hanging at waist height for proper stropping or do we do it that way because its better. seems it was more conveineint for the barber to have it there on the chair where he was working. seems to work finw hanging up at shoulder height and i havent mounted anything lower yet.

It's whatever works best for you. Different people have different motor coordination skills and so everyone's a little different. I prefer mine hung about chest high and I hold the strop end about waist high. I'm sure for many it's whatever position you learned to strop more than any other factor.

I have mine attached to the towel rack, I have a microscopic bathroom... I also pull it to my chest and strop at a slight up slope. I've not tried other arangements as I just don't have anywhere else to put it...

At elbow height works best for me, and drilled into a wall stud, not just the wall.

Thanked: 0thats how mine is, on the towel rack and i move it to another wall after use so i can use the towel. strop center hangs at the shoulder. no place to put it without it getting wet from the sink or shower so its up near the ceiling when not in use. just wondered if there should be a hook mounted way down low

Mine is attached to the linen closet door knob with a loop of nylon. I pull it on a very slight upslope. Hey, I'm a short fellow.

Thanked: 1Well, since my strop came in today, I had to find a place to try it out. There happened to be a hook slightly lower than elbow height hanging near a doorway not too far from the bathroom. It worked pretty good.
As for how tight... I pulled it pretty tight, and actually think I got decent results, but then again, I don't have anything to really gage that by. I did notice that I kept pulling a slight twist in it without realizing it. I need much more practice.

Thanked: 0Not too tight for the daily strop, just enough to keep it from sagging but not enough to bow the leather lengthwise.
As for the pasted strops, well, the best luck I've had with them is when I've attached them to a hook on the kitchen sink and then to the arm of a chair I lean back on - in other words, WAY tighter than I could hold for five minutes with just my arm. The pasted strops are made from a 1/4" thick belt with D-rings in it, so it doesn't deform. Basically as solid as I'd imagine a paddle strop would be.
As for strop height, I agree with the rest, try a couple different heights. I had terrible luck with the strop up high. I did that because I also have a tiny bathroom. Then I put a hook under the sink and (as long as the shower door is open) had remarkably better results with the strop at waist height.
