I used to just hold the strop by the ring holding the handle. A couple fingers stabled the strop perfectly. That was when I had a 3 inch honey brown. Now I have a 2.5 inch latigo linen strop that I can only hold by the handle. I prefer the D ring but this works as well.
I like the D ring- probably because that's what I learned on.

personally I prefer the straight across the bottom no hardware style. I think it looks classier.
I haven't used a handle, but the D-ring certainly makes it easy to hold the canvas and leather at the same time and keep one taut.
I just asked Tony what he used, and purchased that style.
2 1/2" Artisan with handle. Knowing that I'd adapt to whichever one I got.
I figured that getting the same type that Tony uses would be a great start.
I am anxiously waiting for the postman to deliver the goods!
Take care,
Mitch
Got it.....going to be using the practice strop for a while...but i'll hang the Artisan up for some eye candy until I'm ready.:y
I'm doing the same thing. The practice strop is a great confidence builder.
I went with Tony's D ring heirloom for my first...I figured it would be easier to hold on to. With all the great reviews I knew there wasn't a bad choice. Should be here next week.
I went with a handle for mine. (+ genuine linen) Should be here any day now.:D
