Pasted Strop!!!
Hey guys,
I am wondering if any of you uses a hanging linen strop for pastes? I am thinking about getting one of Tony's 2 sided linen strops as a pasted, but am wondering how this may compare with using a pasted leather paddle strop? Would there be a huge difference in using paddle vs. hanging, i.e. linen vs. leather? Thanks guys,
Kyle

Thanked: 351Kyle,
I've got both of Tony's linens and I personally would not use them for paste. The cotton is quite a coarse weave and the genuine is a bit too limp/flexible for pasting with anything other than white paste in my opinion and frankly I find it to be quite perfect just as is.
I would suggest a nice smooth leather strop for pasting or perhaps the Hand American felt strop, though I have not seen that one in person. My dad, back in the day when he still offered straight razor shaves always used a double leather strop, with one side pasted. He had numerous paddle strops of all kinds of construction, mostly made by himself and used with a variety of pastes that he would use for maintenance after hours but during the workday it was the hanging strop alone. Unfortunately, he has past on, before I got the straight razor bug myself so I never got to really talk to him about it. Funny thing is, he always used a safety razor for himself and swore by Wilkinson Sword blades once the Gillette Blue blades went off the market.
I still have his last shop strop, a Fromm double leather, no handle style with the sharpening side cut 2.5" shorter.
Regards
Christian

I know many use hanging strops with paste and I have too but I find paddle strops seem to work better with paste. However like anything else if you have been using the hanger with paste and you get good results thats all that matters.
