Info on this strop? Many Pics...
This was the strop that my grandfather used before I was born. I really dont know anything about it because he died before i was born and my dad just hung it out in his shop and never touched it until I nabbed it a few years back. It is not in good shape at all.
Does anyone know anything about this brand of strop? I can't really even make out the label on it. Also, do you think I could get it back up and working?
Thanks in advance guys and girls!

Well, its obviously a Shumate strop, but you probably already knew that. I think it might be a little difficult to get back up and running.
If you try to I might suggest waiting until your proficient so you don't nick the strop.
Getting it flat would be the first challenge, I think. Perhaps a PM to Tony Miller.

Well I am still picking out my strop so you can take my answer any way you want. I would do as your father did and hang the Shumate on the wall in remembrance of your grandfather. Buy a new strop to use in stead of distroying you grandfathers in a attempt to make it serviceable. You will probably get better shaves too....

Yes, I'm afraid as a working strop its toast. You can try some quality cleaner and conditioner like Bick. It won't do any harm as its PH balanced to match the leather and it contains no petrolium products. However I'm not optomistic.

^^^ Yeah, I kinda thought it was toast. But I also know that if anyone out there knew a way it would be the guys here!
I'm just gonna frame 'em and hang them up.

I have done leather craft for thirty five years. I have conditioned, treated, rubbed and oiled all kinds of leather goods. Someone mentioned a brand of leather dressing by name. I have no experience with it, so I will not make a comment on it. I have used Dr. Johnson's and "Aussie." I wouldn't hesitate to use either. But I would never dream of trying to actually use Grandpa's Strop. Take care of it and cherish it, but don't try to use it.
Only my 2 cents...and worth every dime you paid for it.

Thanked: 0I'm no expert on strops, but that looks pretty dead to me. As others have suggested i think its best not you use it. If it were me and i were lucky enough to have my grandfathers strops i would carefully clean them up, partially to make them look better, but mainly to stop and further degredation of the leather, then i owuld have them framed with maybe a picture of my grandfather.

Don't just hand it on the wall yet thought. That leather will continue to to deteriorate if you do not condition it... it may not work for stropping anymore, but some attention with some neet's feet oil or mink oil or whatever conditioner you prefer should forestall further deterioration to a large extent.
