I'm going to be getting a kitten in another couple months, and I've never had one before. It struck me today that any wild strop in its natural habitat will dangle much in the same way a string or ball of yarn dangles that kitties are so fond of.
Does anyone have problems with their cats shredding their strop? I'm a wee bit concerned about my nice new TM Artisan being ripped to shreds.

I have a cat without claws and I have caught him a time or two batting at my strop. My strop is clipped to my towel rack in my bathroom, so to prevent any potential damage, I simply cover the strop with a towel when I'm not using it so he can't see it.
I haven't had the funds to buy my strop yet, and in any case it will be in a bathroom where the cats don't have access, but if anything dangles in a place where a cat can reach it (and you know how high they can jump), it will be batted and will gather scratches. Especially if the cat is a kitten.
Ah, thank you both. Perhaps I will be hanging it in the closet to be closed at all times lol.
Never mind the strop, cats can be mesmerized by straights as well.... it's not a good thing to let a cat bat a straight around. I accidently left one of my razors on the forced air heating floor vent to dry in the bathroom while I walked out to get something... a few seconds later I came back to see one of the critters with her paw out, trying to play with that razor! :eek: I no longer use the vent for drying my razor.....

We clip our cat's nails every 10 days or so to keep the claw damage to a minimum. She is absolutely obsessed with anything that hangs down or dangles in any way, but so far she has left my strops alone. I think it's because she hasn't seen them swinging yet. If it .... doesn't .... move.... :)

Im keeping mine in the closet for this very reason.

I hear that. My cats are little trouble makers and the have gotten their paws on my straights from time to time. luckily they were closed.Quote:

Closet or bedroom may be just the ticket for keeping out of reach of cats.
Mine loves the smell of the strop, but has never clawed it.
As for loose razor attacking, it's horrible, I keep the straights in the same drawer as her treats. She'll try and hop into the drawer, but she's beginning to learn.
This brings back memories of kittens and swinging things :eek: Suffice it to say I was thankful I wasn't shaving at the time ! (though it wouldn't have been with a straight then)

I have been very lucky. Mr. Toes seems to know what will get me angry if he F's it up. He has never torn up my Bang & Olufsen speakers which look like scratching posts and he shows no interest in my strop...while I am around (I hope he never reads this post). Maybe while I'm at work, Mr. Toes spends his time trying to convince Basil to piss on my speakers and chew up my strop.:D
A new puppy chewed up my 3" Tm Red Latigo strop pretty good.
It's now become a 2", but it's quite nice nonetheless.
Oh... puppies are really bad about chewing ANYTHING within reach. When my youngest dog was a puppy, I had to replace two comforters, a pair of shorts, a nice pair of sandals and my phone's charger cable. She was particularly destructive.Quote:

Bella doesn't bother with my strop at all and it's been hanging practically right beside her cat tree for months. Her nails get clipped whenever a sharp one shows up and she has a rope scratch post to dull them on. I think a puppy would be worse with anything leather around.

Seconding that YIKES and that :nono: ! Declawing is amputating the first joint of every toe on the front paws. Illegal in several countries and, I believe, some states; rightfully so in my opinion. And aside from the ethical aspect, being without front claws--a basic tool for hunting and defense for a cat--often has bad psychological effects. Declawed cats are much more likely to become biters, among other things.Quote:

There are options to have plastic caps affixed outside the claws... but I'm only slightly less against this than I am declawing.
The only time our first cat ever really scratched anything badly was after we got his claws clipped - well except the afore mentioned dangling incident. We very quickly learned our lesson - no more clipping for him. Our second though ... she loves to scratch the carpet but fortunately not much else.
The other night mine attacked a moth on the curtains of my bedroom... she was hanging from the drapes for almost half an hour.
Still no attention to the strop other than sniffing though!

Milo my dear kitty hasn't scratched up my TM Starter that hangs from the bathroom closet doorknob.
DO BEWARE the open straight. The cats are like children..into everything! :)
