Thanked: 0Old strop...still good?
hello all! I have found a strop (actually a friend of mine had it stored for a long time, and as such has a big crease in it). anyway, I took some photos, the best that my camera would let me, and i was wondering if it is still good to use. If not...anywhere i can else i can find my first strop? thanks in advance!

I would give it a good scrubbing with saddle soap and a pumice stone, hang about 2 lbs. of weight on the end and let it dry slowly, then give it a couple of doses of Lexol. It just might be useable after a little work.

I think kelbro has the plan!

Thanked: 0great! what kind of scrub should i use on the canvas side, and what should i use on the leather side? The pictures aren't perfectly clear, but one side is leather and the other canvas..or some other material...

That strop is in pretty rough shape. The question is, is it worth the time and effort over buying a new strop which isn't really that expensive. I would not use saddle soap because using saddle strop means using water and the strop is already pretty dry and cracked and water will not help you. Get yourself some Bick leather cleaner. Its a gel, uses no water and scrub with that. After that any good leather conditioner. I've found that when a strop gets a bad crease in it you can hang a 50 pound weight from it for weeks and it won't come out (I've tried it). The only way to get it out is to soak the leather in water and let is slowly dry then the crease will come out however in your case soaking that strop in water might be the final nail in the coffin.
Just looking at the leather surface, if it was me I'd just get a new strop or a used one in better shape. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

It looks like the leather has degraded to the point where it's pretty much
unusable. I wouldn't bother with it.
