I'm thinking about getting this for $20 then if I decide to spend more $ I'll upgrade to one of the Original Tony Miller ones and use this for pasting.

Opinions?

looks A little rough to me . I like a smooth strop.

For 10 dollars more you can get a Tony Miller starter strop, And add hardware to it late.r It will blow that 1 out of the water in finish and function, His strops are very nicely finished, Tony is a perfectionist in his work, I just got mine today and the leather is stunning in every respect. i got the real linen also just to have it but for an extra 10 bucks you get so much more

I work with leather professionally. It looks like someone is trying to get rid of their "junk" scrap leather that comes from the belly and neck of the animal. I would certainly avoid it.

Quick update. I bought an apprentice Strop from Tony early in the weekend.

I'm hoping to eventually get the artisan and use the apprentice off-side for pasting.

And add hardware to it late.r

How can you add hardware too it? Seems like that's kind of difficult for a non-leatherworker.

Tony used to sell a kit that you could attach at least a "Dee Ring" to the bottom. No longer available at this time!

I am in the process of doing this myself. First you need to buy the hardware. You can get "Dee Rings" and screw posts, or what is called Chicago screws from most tack supply places. You will want either a 2-1/2" or 3" Dee ring, depending on your strop. They will come in nickle plate, brass, or stainless. I would guess the size of the screw post would be around 3/8". This is a guess, but it would need to join 3 layers of leather together, but they have different lengths and you can buy them in packs of (10). I got my hardware at Tandy Leather:

Just go to "Hardware" and look for Dee Rings and screw posts.

Now the hard part. If you could look at the bottom of a TM strop, you will see how the Dee ring is attached at the bottom. There is a piece of leather that is 3-1/2" x (whatever the width of your strop) with a notch cut right at the fold at the bottom. Nestled in this fold at the notch is your Dee ring, and the leather piece is folded in half and joined to the end of your strop with a couple of screw posts. You will need a leather punch to make the holes in your leather to join all this together. I just need to find somewhere locally where I can buy a few pieces of nice soft leather. I have two to do. There is a Tandy Leather place over in Boise and I'm gonna drift over there and see what they have. I may buy a leather punch, also.

* This is for just the Dee ring at the bottom. I think most guys just grab the Dee ring at the bottom, and not the piece of leather attached to the Dee ring. If you want that, I guess you could cut a piece of leather and attach it with a couple of screw posts, but for me, it's not necessary.

The Apprentice Strops mentioned above already come with an integral cut handle as part of the design. One could add different hardware to the top, a leather cap and snap swivel in place of the grommet and thong though but the bottom is pretty well taken care of.

Opps! I guess I haven't seen one. I just thought the bottom was squared off. Oh, well!

You can then use my instructions to place a "Dee Ring" at the bottom of a straight, squared off, hanging leather strop.
