Thread: Thiers-Issard Travel Strop

I travel with this strop and case. I have never pasted it however. I just use it as a regular strop on the road.Razor I usually take is a Mastro new grind Ebony handle. I always make sure it's sharp before I go.........

I recently started working for the railroad, so I'm in a hotel about 3 times a week. This strop has enabled me to take my razor on the road.

This is my road paddle when traveling. I love that it's got a case. It's perfect for weekend trips where I only need to bring one razor.

It's an odd felt on one side. I can't say I particularly like it, nor do I particularly like the feel/draw of the leather side. The draw of the fabric or felt side is almost like running your blade over a close cut shag rug. It comes off with particles and has a very tough drag going across it, after being pasted. I pasted mine with .25 diamond paste. The felt feels like it's gunked up, for lack of a better term.

The leather is very soft, and has hardly any draw.

All that said, it seems to do its job. I wouldn't rely on the pasted felt to give me too much more of an edge though. The leather is just good enough for a final smoothing.

OT: I wish Tony Miller would make one with a leather case for travel this size. I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and get his 3" paddle strop. There is seriously no leather like the feel of TM's Latigo that I've tried.

I have been giving some thought to this for next year. One of my Amish friends has a daughter who works in a saddle shop and sews their best "show" tack. This is one of the types of items a factory can actually produce far less expensively than a small home based business as mass production is needed to keep costs down but I will se what she can do.
I would venture that a nicely sewn case from good leather would cost as much as the paddle itself at $45....which actually puts it fairly close to the TI model.
I am more likely to make one for the Superwide though instead as I doubt i will produce the box strops again. I myself like the little TI version but will change the leather on it to some of mine.

Tony that gives me new found hope. I would LOVE even your wide paddle with a travel case. Good stuff. I hope it works out. Also, that price doesn't sound, to me at least, as any thing I'd hesitate to purchase.

Will they be albe to make the "spring" on the wood surface. I don't even know how i'd go about that without a drill ...those clever amish...

And talking about travel... what else do you guys use? I can't imagine a practical way to take my brush/soap/mug

I got a travel brush that breaks down so the knot rides in the handle. Mine is a Muhle with aluminum case; wish I'd have gotten the brass & nickel case instead, just for mass. My soap lives in a rubbermaid tub and I got a little one-man pie tin at a cooking store for making my lather.

If you live near an Ikea they have stainless steel cans with see-through lids that look like they'd be ideal for soap. I first saw one in a post from one of our Scandinavian members. I'd have one now, but they don't sell them on the web and I don't live near a store.

I wrap my SRD modular paddle in a grocery bag to keep the paste off my clothes.

Also almost ordered the travel strop... but then it occurred to me, if I paste one side, and slide it into the case, the inner back of the case would be stained... then i remove the stop for use... and now the front inner part of the case would also be stained... not in goes the paddle strop and now i have paste on both sides! ...i'm starting to agree that the grocery bag is more deal than a leather case.

So i will just got 2x32 dual strop from whippeddog, remove one from the hanger and use that with paste if I need to... also way cheaper .... meanwhile i'm just focusing on the basic as in my 3rd shave it's worse than with a electric shaver... at least only one small cut in the finger so far
