Default Illinois 827 "Imerial Russian" Strop

Does anyone have experience with these?

    I received one today.

The smooth/finished side of the leather is ribbed and faces inwards, while the rough side faces out.

That's the opposite of my other strops.

Is there some reason for this that anyone knows of?

If its just like the 827 on the newbie thread use the linen/canvas first and then the front side of the leather.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Was more wondering why the rough (grain) side would be intended for stropping. Every other strop I've had has the finished/smooth side out.

I did find this on Badger & Blade from Tony Miller:

The Illinois #827 is an odd beast really. At least a year ago when I sold them there were actually the rough side of the hide, dyed and compressed to appear smooth. The reverse side, against the linen was scored with ridges as part of the comoressing process.

I use and have used the #827 for over 2 years the rough side leather smooths up quite a bit after a week anyway... You will find that it is a great strop the feedback while stropping is fantastic....
Also the linen breaks in after about a week too...

    Default YEAH BOY!

The 827 is my first strop and I have never had one that gives feed back like that baby does. The draw is amazing and it stays in great shape for a long time. I have had mine for almost a year and never have needed to oil it or condition it in any way save for use, running my hand over it and a stiff brushing every blue moon.

The only problem I ever had with mine was due to the fact that I was gripping it incorrectly rather than pinching the handle and I ended up cupping it during my stropping. I now know better and don't have any problems with it at all.

    Hope this helps!

    -Rob

Russian strops have the rough side outside. I have one and it performs great. I have nothing negative to say about the 827, in my opinion, a great strop.

Thanks for the replies and good to hear!

I was a little worried when I opened the package... I was expecting smooth leather like my trusty 127's.

I have had great performance out of the 827. I think that others would share my thoughts. It is a great strop congratulations. I just posted for another user that I coated one side of the linen strop with diamond spray and it works great.

Hold it one second. The leather stropping surface is the red leather outer one marked Illinois etc. Not the ribbed tan inner surface.

Like Tony M. mentioned in another thread, these Illinois strops used the belly surface.
