Thread: Are these stropping pastes any good for razors?

So I can keep my razors nice and sharp with just the Chinese and chrome paste for now. And wait with the 4/8 until I am going to restore razors or something like that, is that what you guys are saying?

In a word; yes. To embellish that word; yes, with proper technique.

The embellished version is far more accurate.

If you are trying to keep a razor sharp that someone else honed, then you need to know how they honed it. did they use tape on the spine? if yes, then you should too. If no, then you shouldn't either.

If you are using balsa or other hard strop, then you should use tape only if you have to use tape on the stones. If you are using a leather or other similar strop material, then you can go without tape as you see fit.

After this feedback, my plan is like this: I will send one razor to Lynn for sharpening and keep one at home. I will also buy the DVD. Then I will keep the one Lynn honed as a referance and use the other one for daily shaving. That way I always have a very sharp razor to compare with.
I am sending out my Dovo and keeping a walter&co that I bought at classifieds, so I guess I could just ask the previous gut about the tape issue. It is going to be really interesting to see how good/bad the edges I use now is compared to one from Lynn.

I have to think a bit, but I might buy the 4/8 right ahead, since I guess it will come sooner or later anyway. Just have to see.

That's a good idea. The norton isn't just for restoration, it can get your razor shaving sharp on it's own. Plus, if you ding your razor a little you can fix it up on the 4k side.

I think I will just go ahead and buy the Norton sometime soon, but first I am going to see what the Chinese can do.

I frequently use Herb's Yellowstone stropping compound on my razors and have had fantastic results. It's an unbeliveably fast polisher and works wonders after honing on my Chinese stone. I use it on suede, then leather, and then switch chromium oxide on balsa. A few passes on my every day leather strop a leaves the blade ready to pass the HHT. The stuff is pretty cheap and one block will last many years.
