The big problem I can see with it is that one slip of the razor and you literally can cut the thing in half - it is very thin. And only time will tell if it remains flat or starts to curl up at the edges. i really do not think that it will tear - it feels at least as strong as my thicker cowhide strops.

Sounds good, maybe a possible alternative to horsehide, which I haven't been able to find down here so far.

Trouble with most roo they sell is it's used for plaiting so fairly thin.
Shame I don't hunt anymore. Used to shoot roos in the Sofala area many moons ago and the hides on those fellas were super thick, more like 3-4mm. Used to cut squares out of the centre of the hide for throw rugs and not one ever curled up at the edges.

Nice work Jimbo, That Roo looks great. Can't wait to try a strop made from it… Is that a Roo thong at the end for tying?

Nice looking strop. I could see myself wanting one!

Shame on you strop people. Why can't you leave HADdicts like me alone to live amongst our stones in our Hone caves?

how does roo compare with deer? I have deerskin riding gloves that are very thin, supple, deliciously soft (I describe them somebody making love to your hands) I took a small spill with them on once and just skuffed the palm. had another pair I took a longer tumble on and it did get through the palm but saved from more than just a scrape. but I have never "tested" cow skin gloves and have only read about kangaroo jackets previous to this. (there was a roo indiana jones jacket I really wanted but didn't have the 650+ if I remember right).

looks good by the way. maybe since you're in the land of roos you can ask the tannery for a thicker piece if you're inclined.

Red - hopefully someone else can chime in on your question because I have no clue how Roo compares to Deer. This stuff feels just like typical leather to me, but thin. I would not call it soft as such, although with some treatment and time I am sure it could get that way.

Anyway, by request I have taken a photo of the resulting strops I made. All of these are already accounted for - the whole purpose of this exercise was to see if Roo might work as a strop and give them away to some people as gifts.

I am not going into the Roo strop making business. Although you cannot see it from the photos, my work is very sub-par and amateurish. Things are out of alignment, crooked, miscut - the whole shebang. I would like to take this opportunity to publically declare my enormous admiration and respect for guys like Tony Miller et al. Respek!

Anyway, here they are. Six, one of a kind, handmade, original pieces of modern art. Each one lovingly crafted by a half-arsed twit with all the skill of a 3 year old monkey with no hands or feet. They are double-sided (two bits of leather each). Enjoy!

Yes, it is Roo cord, or thong. Nice and strong.
