I used plain old vegetable oil from my kitchen. Worked like a charm.

I've used water with good results.

I used 3-in-1 oil (basically sewing machine oil).

I bought the liquid CroOx from japaneseknifesharpening.com, works really well - no mixing required!

The HandAmerican Liquid chrome is the best I have ever used. Beats Dovo green paste, definitely beats LeeValley chrome bar, and even beats my homemade Cr02/Vaseline mix (of which I have rather too much in the basement - a pound of Cr02 goes a long way!)

I gotta agree. While I haven't tried the the CrOx / Vaseline blend, I have used the HandAmerican CrOx liquid and like the way it goes on. Critics would say I used too much. Whatta they know? I say it's just right. The razors like it too.

Dry CrOx powder rubbed into the balsa dry will work fine.I have also used industrial water based CrOx lapping compound on the balsa- that works great too

Can't go wrong. Just use it sparingly. Outstanding tool for super smooth edges and CHEAP.
