    Default Best cromium oxide ?

    Gentlemen,

I am like a little kid waiting for Christmas as I look in the post everyday for my TM 3" cotton/latigo/horse leather strop combo to come. To the cotton strop I am planning on putting cromium oxide on it (unless better suggestions?)

Is there a specific cromium oxide you would recommend? Best place to buy it? I have seen an art store close my home that sells it for art purposes...is it the same stuff (probably the same chemicals but for stropping purposes?)

And finally, I have read here threads that when I put it, less is better, but then I see other memebers put their pictures and it looks like a green pool table? What is you experience?

    Thanks guys

    Eric

personally I wouldn't put it on your strop. Find a paddle or use some balsa instead.

I wouldn't trust the art store stuff, Id guess its to be used as a pigment? Anyway, its grit size wouldn't be suitable, most likely.

Straightrazordesigns also has good cro ox.

PM ChrisL (member here). He sells little bags of the good stuff for $4 or $5. It's plenty enough to do at least 4 paddles (and probably more).

+1. Contact ChrisL, get some of his chrome ox and make yourself a balsa paddle strop. Plenty of info on this in the strop section, including a thread by yours truly about the one I made. I was skeptical about the chrome, but now I'm a believer.

While some disagree about the necessity for the cotton/linen strop, a lot of us really appreciate the benefits of regular use of that strop prior to leather. If you apply ChromeOx to that strop, then you will lose the option of having access to the plain cotton strop. Personally, I wouldn't want it on my daily use strop. If you want to put ChromeOx on a strop, I'd suggest you put it on a separate one. Rembember that the Chrome Ox is not for daily use.

Don't Chrome Ox your TM canvas strop.

Put some Dovo white paste on there! Great for daily stropping.
