    Default Good starter strop?

Can anyone recommend a good starter strop that isn't too expensive, for when I destroy it?

My first strop was the entry level by Dovo. Next step: a russian strop to experiment the use of the canvas side.

Buy from Tony Miller and purchase his "practice strop" for a nominal sum. Absolutely worth every penny and then some.

    Leighton,
These are not available separately, only with one of the Artisans.

What I did is order my "good strop" and my practice strop together from Tony at the same time. I picked out the strop I wanted to be my "good strop," that is, the strop I would move onto once I learned, and then I tacked on his practice strop for $8 I think it was. Very much worth it! The practice strop is actually really nice, but it's great for practicing, because you'll almost definitely nick it a few times, and for $8 you won't care as much. Especially with his beautiful other strop sitting next to it to admire This might be a little more money than you want to drop right now, and as Tony says, the "practice strops" aren't available for sale by themselves. Tony also will be offering the "barber's friend" strop sometime in April, for $34. Should be a great strop at a great price. This one might actually be too nice to practice on, though, and you might feel really bad if you nick it

Ruprazor offers a good inexpensive starter strop for $20 shipped called the Filly. It's also pasted on one side so you can do some light touchup with your razors as well. If you don't want to place a heftier order through Tony and get his practice strop, I'd say go with the Filly.

Should I get a "starter" razor as well? Is it possibly to permanently ruin a blade with poor technique?

Thats what I meant to say.

    To: theriver,
Yes, you can dull your razor through poor technique. But I would say the odds are pretty low and its always fixable.

Yes, I would personally buy a starter razor because you might not even like SR shaving AND you might drop it. Nothing to do with stropping though.

It's good to have a couple of razors, especially when you're just learning. You really only need one, but it's nice to have one to fall back on if you do accidentally dull it. But permanently ruining a blade due to poor technique? Well, the only way that you could permanently ruin a razor is by getting a big chip in the edge, which would require you do drop it right on the edge, or by hitting it against something. But other than that, I wouldn't worry. If you dull it by poor stropping or shaving technique, it's nothing that isn't reversable.

Heck, pick up at least 5 or 6 extra razors. That way you KNOW you're covered, right?
