deer skin paddle
I covered one of my paddles with deer skin, the other side is pasted. I found that the deer skin side has a nice draw to it. It was smooth enough after the tanning process so all I had to do was hand rub it. It worked out fine.

It is a 1/8 inch thick and very soft. The leather was given to me so I will have to check on the tanning method and the draw on it is great now that I have been rubbing it with my hand.

Thanked: 3That is sweet. My Great-granny has a big bag of deer hides that she and my great-grandfather took down (she hunted till she was 83 and turned 95 last week). I might be able to score some from her. Would there be issues from dyed leather do you think?

After a month of use I am a fan of this strop it does strech a little so I would make it extra tight on the leather side other than that it is great!

Just a thought, I have a couple of strops with one D ring holding both a leather and a fabric strop. After a while if one stretches more than the other it is a PITA to keep the more stretched one taut. So I think one D ring for the linen and another for the leather is a good idea. Nice strop you made there.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 402Why don't you glue some fabric on the back of the leather?
No more stretching issues.
