yellow paste assuming its a standard type is the basic non abrasive paste used to condition your strop. Normally you would use it or any strop dressing to keep the strop from drying out and help provide some draw on the leather. I live in the S.W where its very dry so I condition my strops every 4 months or so. In a more humid area you may only need to do it once or twice a year.

Some people when they get a new strop the break it in by conditioning it and rolling a bottle or rolling pin back and forth on it for a while though I personally don't think its necessary. If it seems to be working good with your razor I wouldn't mess with it for now.

The bottle is handy for flattening a strop. Occaionally they will either cup or crown from storage, humidity, etc... and the razor will only contact part of the surface. Laying it flat and rolling it helps to flatten it again.
