Airline seat belt
So I have a length of airline seatbelt. Don't ask, don't tell. Will it work as a strop? I hear about people using them all the time, but are they actually any good or are they, like my levi's, a get-by cheap substitute?

Try it, and report back.

This is what I wanted to avoid... I've only used an Illinois (leather and linen) newspaper and levi's. So I wouldn't know if its a legit strop material or simply a get me by...

Tie it to the towel rack, strop a razor then form your own opinion, no big deal.
Empirical testing
My opinion is it works, but not as nice as an Illinois strop.

The SRD webbed fabric has been working so well for me that it made me curious. My boss's son works for Roush Racing in NC. I asked if he can get me a length of shoulder harness to try.
There was an old thread awhile back where some members posted that they tried automobile seat belt material. I wanted to try the shoulder harness used in NASCAR racing because it is wider. If and when I get a length I will try it and report back.
Good luck with the airline belt. It ought to be pretty good I'll bet.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

It ought to be pretty good. It feels right- like it should strop well. I don't think I'd use it every day- the feel of natural linen (or at least a better approximation than Nylon...) is so much more appealing (just cus I own an Illinois doesn't mean I like it, it also feels wrong). So far of the two "linens" I've tried, the levi's win, but I'm not about to cut them up, or even buy more cus the Illinois gets the job done. I'll report back after a few tries. I'll strop three blades on it, do three passes, report back. If I remember I'll report back after a few different days of shaving, because three different blades in one night not very controlled or scientific.
