Some of the bar stuff (e.g. Formax (as from Woodcraft)) has particles as large as 6 microns. Hand American 0.5 CrO powder is of known quality.

I have a the green honing compund from Lee valley that I use - it works fine and is about .5 microns. I have used it on a leather paddle with no issues - the stuff at woodcraft - is it lee valley or woodcraft branded?

Thanked: 317The only two I would consider using personally are the hand american, and the sticks from classic shaving. In fact, I have used both, and sold balsa wood hones pasted with both.
The Hand American is well known for consistency around here, and is frequently sold in the classifieds for about $4. (I can say that because I'm not the one selling it )
The chromeox sticks from classic shaving are the same ones that Maestro Livi uses and sells with his loom strops. I don't even care what the micron size is. If it's good enough for a Master like Maestro Livi, it's good enough for you and me.
As far as the difference between the two, I don't see any difference in performance. It's just a matter of how you want to apply it.

Chrome Oxide... where are you hiding?
I have been trying to find a good .5 micron chrome oxide product since I joined this outfit. Where does one find paste, powder, both? I have searched every search engine known to no avail. Please... someone find me this stuff or a reasonable facsimile!

The crome-ox at Woodcraft is Formax as one of the above members posted and identified so I ordered the cro-ox from SRD along with the naniwa 12k and a dmt for lapping, after reserching this forum for a set up to keep my razors fresh

I use it for stroping and polishing.Alex Ts.

The stuff for $4 from the classifieds is the Hand American. If you want just enough for 1 or 2 pastings, that's certainly the way to go. If you want to have a supply, I'd recommend either buying a tub from hand american, a tub of paste from classic shaving, or one of the maestro livi crayons from SRD, as all of them will go a long way.
I've pasted half a dozen balsa wood bench hones with one of the crayons, and used 1/4 of it or less.
One of the $4 packets was 'just' enough to paste 3 balsa wood bench hones, which is enough for a strop, with left overs to re-paste it once.
