Welcome to SRP. Sure you can. Here is an excerpt from a 1961 barber manual on honing and stropping.

The last couple of pages are on stropping. Note the suggestion to practice flipping the blade without making the stroke until you have that learned.

Not moving the wrist and holding the tang between the thumb pad and forefinger tip is also recommended for being able to better control the amount of pressure.

The honing tutorial in the article has been very helpful to me as well.

Here is the SRP Wiki with loads of info on all things straight razor related. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

    Welcome to SRP, mate.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "replacement blades". Do you mean something like dovo shavette which uses disposable blades? I guess you could practice with a butterknife that has correct feeling.

However, I think it would be very useful to you to visit your usual stropper and ask for a tutorial or lesson - you would have your technique polished by a veteran.

You can use a butter knife to begin with. I'd worry about hurting the strop to begin with as well so take your time.
