BTW according to rep at TLF these are acquired from 9-10oz

I took the liberty of initialing these as well as the 4-6, 5-7 and 9-10 oz so I don't have to go through whole process again.

I spoke with one of reps and they said I've to speak with manager about getting some deal as cutting some sections at cost because these won't be any good sitting at the store and I'd like to be able to use some without paying 100xx for measly few sections.

Thanks for support guys and Tony I now know what you mean by being able to use 50% of hides.

I still have to find reputable vendor to provide me with o-rings, swivel snaps, and strap keeper loops. The one I dealt with prior wasn't very cooperative so I won't be dealing with them.

All i wanted to do was make these for fun hahah it's challenging and I'll keep at it

The marks and scars you see are typical of latigo and many other hides. Areas such as this are discarded leaving just the sections with good leather from which the strops are cut. It is the luck of the draw as to how many strops can be cut from a side. I occasionally get side from which only my practice strops can be cut. This waste factor is part of why strops are priced at what they are..........the tannery does not let you send back the leftovers !

    Indeed.

I spent some time with all the workers and one in particular my buddy. Sometimes these things tend to get "folded" or there are some stampings on hides. It's inevitable as it's nature of beast when dealing with "natural" hides.

I'd love to talk to you sometime Tony.

    Thank you,

    Ivan

    Very nice effort Ivan!!

Half the fun is playing with all the different leathers and applicable treatments that produce good stropping results.

    Have fun,

    Default DIY Strop

    Ivan, Nice job.
I recently purchased a remnant piece 9 oz of Black Latigo from the bottom of the bin of a local Tandy store, at a great price about $15.00 as I recall. It is about 36" X 20" sort of triangular shape scrap with no visable defects except on two edges.

I think I can get 3, 3" strops and some smaller paddles out of it. I have been looking for the loops and the Lobster clip without any luck. Where did you find them?

I recently purchased a 3" Hard Wool Felt & Heringbone Linen strop from Straight Razor Designs, I charged the felt with .025 Diamond Spray and use the linen bare. They are great finishers. I find that I put my thumb in the loop above the handle. There is just enough room to get my thumb hooked in at the knuckle and tension the strops. It is much more comfortable than grasping the leather handles.

So I would like to set up the leather Latigo strops the same as yours and the Straight Razor Designs strops. I have everthing else except the loops and Lobster Claw.

So if you would let me know where you purchased yours. I think the black latigo with black leather handles and nickel hardware will make a very cool looking strop, kind of "Mad Max" like.

    Thanks

    Marty

Marty sorry for the confusion but as mentioned the swivel snaps and strap keeper loops are from my SRD Latigo.

I had to get the D-rings from Tandy. #1134-12
I must caution you that it's rather thick. I had to do away with the English Bridle handles because the screws wouldn't tighten properly. So rather than force and cause stripping I gave it up. I'll use it another time.
It works fine with the SRD hardware but not mine. I've been meaning to post current pics but been busy with other things.

You have to purchase the O-ring, Dees, strap keeper loop, and swivel snaps individually.

I'm still searching for suppliers. Here's one:

    S & D Trading Co. - Hardware Main Page

This one don't even bother in case you run into:

UMX Big Size Bold Snaps With Push Latches - For Easy Open - Schematic Drawing

Their site is a PITA to navigate through and I've been using web for over decade.

It took them well over a day to respond only to say "I need your information"

I already provided everything you need what do you want my SSN#? :hammer:

    They don't have strap keeper loop ( Y-10 ) and Dees ( Y-05 )

BTW I took the liberty of measuring the hardware:

    Swivel Snap
From top hook to bottom swivel 2 1/2"
    inside hook 1/2"
    inside swivel 2"
length of swivel about 2 1/2"

    O-ring
    1" inside

    Strap keeper loop
    2 1/2 x 1 1/4
    inside 2"

    Best of luck mate

    Thanks Deus!

    Sans stamp

This was a PITA to do I took my time but in the end there were some flaws. It's ok though I like the way it turned out. I need to get one of those clicker dies to make life easier. I know hammering repeatedly on the handle won't be affective eventually as it can bend the inner hole of stamp. Need a heavy duty ramfoot as it is spread pressure over stamp which provide cleaner and clearer impressions. This won't work without the imprinting machine which is rather costly.

    Please note

I have no intention of selling these. Not in week, few months or even year.
I merely put son's initials because that's how ideally I'd like it to look should I ever decide to do it part/full-time. I'm pre-occupied with more pressing matters.

Once in awhile I will post progress of strops not to promote but to illustrate what can be done with limited materials

    Thank you,

    Ivan
