Default how to repaste a leather paddle strop

I got a leather paddle strop for a giveaway price.
But the CrOx looks pretty uneven on the leather strop.
I want to remove the Crusted CrOx that is on there now so I can repaste it.
Any suggestions on what the best way to go about this?

How about some saddle soap and a small stiff brush?

I had a similar situation and used sandpaper and it worked pretty well. I don't remember the grit, but it was regular garnet-type sandpaper.

A small finger nail type scrubbing brush and baby wipes, but dont get it too wet, baby wipes will clean just about anything off anything
    I use them A LOT!
