Dog barks when I strop
Just got a new puppy. What the heck is he hearing that I'm not? He doesn't bark much normally, but goes nuts when I strop my razor.

You're not stropping on the dog, right?

I wouldn't be surprised if there are high pitched noises from vibrations as you strop the razor.
I once had a friend over; in the morning when I shaved she was at the other end of the house. I stropped my 7/8 Friodur as normal before shaving - she said it sounded like I was grinding something. It could just be a matter of what you get used to.

You are not stropping the dog correctly (?).
Is it a "singing" blade?
Does he bark more on the canvas side
or on the leather side?
Do you sing in the shower and while you are stropping.
My bet is the canvas combined with a singing blade
combines to invite the dogs to join in....Last edited by niftyshaving; 12-12-2009 at 07:49 AM. Reason: Kept thinking...

Dogs do hear things on much broader spectrum than humans. (up to 60 kHz(?), while humans are very lucky to hear even 20kHz). So you're causing high frequency sounds your wee pup can hear and its bothering him.
You could secure the strop via a piece of leather (or something a little flexible material (compared to metal) that could attenuate the sound). Also you could let the strop a little looser/pull it more tightly to see if that drops/raises the frequency so the pup doesn't mind. Other things to try is paddle & loom strops and thicker grinds.

Put earplugs in the dog's ears.

I have been thinking about this.
When it comes to barking dogs, well, there's barking and then there's barking.
What I mean is not all barking is or sounds the same.
There is the bark that says "that sound hurts my ears!"
And the bark that says "that sound scares me!" (sometimes accompanied by cowering or hiding behind someone's legs)
sometimes the bark says "that sounds like a toy and I wants to play with it" preferably to chew and destroy it (keep the strop in a safe place if it is this one.
there is the bark that says "I don't know what that is or what it is but I am barking at it!" usually accompanied by a puzzled puppy look.
Well you get what I am saying, there's barking and there's barking and sometimes you can tell what the pup is trying to say.
