A few questions on strop paste
Hey there!
I just picked up one of the NOS linen strops off of the classifieds, rendering my old one useless (yay!) and therefore pasteable (YAY!).
Anyways this got me thinking.
I have a great Paladin strop from Kenrup, with the canvas component, so I don't need to leave anything else unpasted. (as well as an NOS red imp that I don't want to use... it looks too good lol)
So I have these surfaces for pasting:
1x Illinois horse hide
1x Illinois linen
2x Vintage linen
3-4x Belfast linen (homemade)
I have crox and ceox, previously dabbled with on balsa, and I prefer rocks. However I wanna try them on hangers. What would be most receptive? The vintage linen and Illinois linen are obviously the treated kind that you find on old strops, the Belfast linen I have is raw cotton basically.
Then is there a strop paste for linen that is NOT abrasive?
Finally can someone straighten out the dovo paste line for me? Are they even worth it compared to crox, ceox, and diamond stuff from SRD?

I think the Dovo white paste is meant for application to a linen strop that will be used daily. The crox, ceox, and diamond spray are for touch ups like once a week at most. The Thiers "Pate A Rasoir" is likewise for touch ups.

Thanked: 3164The little foil containers contain black and red paste. The black is for final polishing (Dovo call it "very fine"), the red is more abrasive (Dovo call it "medium fine") - each one has to be applied to a strop dedicated to its sole use. The red may be a bit too aggressive - a lot of people wont use it.
You put a small pea-sized amount on you thumb and work it in, or put it on a cloth and work it in: dab it on four or five places up and the strop and work it well in.
Regards,
Neil.

Thanked: 7I've used the Thiers-Issard Pate a Rasoir on the linen side of a Dovo (I think) 2" strop. It does a great job, but you need to go easy. It's more aggressive than crox. I get a little nervous about rounding edges with pastes on hangers, but haven't caused myself any problems yet.
