Thanked: 6Merkur Platinum disposable blades vs straight razor
Hey all...
How sharp can one get a straight razor vs a disposable blade?
Can one hone/strop a straight edge to surpass a disposable Merkur Platinum?
Thanks!!!!!!!

Yes IME one certainly can if they know what they are doing.

+1 on Jimmys comments!
One thing the makers can do with disposable blades is to coat them in teflon, which can make them feel sharper, but they are in fact not any sharper. They just have less resistance due to the teflon.
So in a nutshell, you can get a straight to be just as sharp, if not sharper (with some good quality hones and some skill) than a DE blade!

You really can't compare them. Its like the old apples to oranges. The disposible are machine made razor blades really. Its like arguing which is more luxurious a Rolls or a Bentley. Both blades will do the job very well.

I don't think I do. But I still get great shaves. The nicest part is that I don't get the nicks associated with a DE razor/blade.
I suppose I could get a straight just as sharp, but I would need a lot of time and probably a more expensive hone or some strops with diamond paste, and the resulting nicks wouldn't be helpful to me.
I think though that I get straights really close though.
