Thanked: 1072Stropping Wedges
I just finished honing a wedge and then went to give it some stropping on leather. I should say that this is the first wedge I've honed or stropped and that I used 3 layers of tape when honing.
On the strop it felt very different to any of my hollow ground razors, which lead me to wonder...Do you need to do anything different when stropping a razor which has been honed with 3 layers of tape to allow for the different bevel angle.
Im probably just over thinking it though, but any input is appreciated.

AFAIK, you dont need to do anything differently for a razor that was taped. The flex in the leather means that it will bend around the edge slightly and make good contact.
Other members may say differently though, and I bow to their experience!

Thanked: 132453 layers is a lot of tape, but no you don't have to change anything on a hanging strop.. Honestly if it were a paddle strop especially a pasted paddle i would leave the tape on myself...
All that being said I have noticed that when stropping wedges if you don't quite hold the strop quite as tight you get a better edge, DO NOT mis-read into what I said there, and loosen the strop tension, just don't hold it quite as tight as you would for a hollow..Last edited by gssixgun; 01-21-2010 at 02:35 PM.

I no longer have any of my wedges (I sold them) But when I did all my pre shave stroping was done the same as with my hollow ground razors.
If I came right off the hones with tape I would leave it on when I went to the cromox pasted strop. Then I would remove the tape and go to normal leather. This is just the way I did it, I am not saying it's the right way.

Thanked: 1072Thanks guys, thats just what I wanted to know.
And Glen, I know 3 layers is a lot, but I put such a nice shiney finish on this one i didnt want the bevel running half way up the blade.
I got a good bevel on it though and man it shaves nice, straight off the coti, 50 laps on leather and a SWEET shave. I'll tape it back up and give it a few laps on the Chrome Ox paddle though just to take it to the next level.
Man, I like this wedge, I'll have to get some more...
Thanks again.

Thanked: 2591On the last wedge I honed I did 3 layers too, but it really depends on the blade.
I started with 2 layers and I noticed some wire edge and small chipping, so I went to 3 and everything fell in place.
I strop the same as I do hollows, and the shaves have been great so far.
Nice looking even bevel by the way.Stefan

Thanked: 13245The proof is in the pudding and I sure can't argue with a nice small even bevel like that one...
Try experimenting with the tension as you strop plain leather on that and see what you find...
