Now I know some of you may cringe and wonder if I am all there, but I took a pumice stone to my fairly new Heirloom hanging strop. I wet the stone and lightly rubbed the surface of the strop then wiped it off with a damp cloth. The strop now has even more drag than before making those razors sing with joy. I had used a pumice stone prior to this too restore an old strop. It really will bring the surface back to life on a older strop and it sure seems too have worked on my new one.

Glen,
Which version of my strop did you buy? The red latigo usually has enough draw for most people but I havd a few hides in the Fall that were a little smoother. The Amber colored and black vegtable tanned leathers I use could benifit from a pumice stone but work okay as is but are much smoother than my Latigo.

Tony, et all...can anyone discuss this a little more. When it works, how you do this, and what effect it has on the strop. I've never messed with any strops, let alone run them under a pumice stone. Poor little strops! Tell us more!

Tony, I am pretty sure it is a red latigo. It took about a week to break in, but was still a bit slippery. All I did was kind of knock the shine off of it.

Glen,
Some of the hides do come thru fairly slick, especially the thicker ones. The newest have had that nice matt finish of the ones I first started with last summer. I do like those best.
I think what Glen is describing is to take a pumice stone and slightly sand the surface. This raises a napp increasing friction when you strop. The latigo on my paddles is treated just like this wheil still on the hide as part of the tanning process. I wished I could get thicker hides done exactly the same way.

Fellas, I too have strops from Tony and they hang for everyone to see. Just something I stumbled upon: by rubbing the oils from my hands into the strop, I get an awesome draw. I rub the strop after each use. It seems to make a noticable difference.
Give it a try.

Tony, maybe you should emboss a curvy woman on the strop instead of a horse head.
Just a thought.
