A tiny bit of wrist motion is OK; Sham says that in the video, and in fact, you can see his wrist move a very small amount--what you want to watch out for is your whole wrist moving over to basically a different plane of motion. That will screw up your return stroke.

My barber taught me to flip.

I honestly have trouble believing that there is a right and wrong way to strop. If you can control the razor, the razor's contact with the strop, and the pressure on the strop, who cares what your wrist does?

Persotally, I do something like method 2 (IIRC - I watched the video a while ago...). And in the thread where Sham originally posted the video, I seem to recall he posted that using "right" and "wrong" in the video wasn't the best choice of words.

I agree with Dylan. I dont think it matters how you do it as long as you're getting good results and not slicing your strop.

My wrist moves a bit but most of the movement comes from my fingers flipping the blade. Thats what works for me and what feels comfortable. You should do what works for you, feels comfortable and gets you results you like!

    Default Flip . . .

    Gentlemen:

I flip, because for me it's more logical, and the process also saves my wrist.

What's important, however, is what works better for the individual shaver.

    Regards,
    Obie

If you can strop a razor to an amazing shave by using only your feet, then keep doing it!

Don't fix it if it aint broke!

Ever tried "flipping" a big old heavy wedge? Wrist movement is inevitable, otherwise it just seems unsafe.

I flip, too. Or maybe more like rolling it between my fingers and thumb, as JimmyHAD said. I probably get a small amount of wrist movement. When I do it, it looks a lot like the guy in this video:
YouTube - Flip a razor for stropping.
