just a quick update about the cerium oxide so far i've found out that optical grade cerium is 3-5 microns and the white cerium(the one i have) is slightly finer but dearer and red rouge is about the same as the cerium oxide i still have more research to do but i have found some products like aluminium oxide can be had in 1 micron i'm thinking this might be good just to polish and refine the edge which is what i was going to use the other side of the strop for

I havent done as much research on it as i'd like to, but Whipped Dog Straight Razor Sales has some for sale, i think it go's for about 3$ a piece. Larry, the owner may know more about it. He has a strop starter kit that comes with a balsa strop and some CeOx as well as FeOx. It's worth a look. Hope it helps.

I have used this: - YELLOWSTONE COMPOUND #514301
since we started discussing cerium in here and it actually works pretty well. I find it to be a little finer than .5 CrOx. I am rubbing the bar on the poly webbing fabric on the back of a strop just until I can see the yellow and then doing 10-15 strokes as a refresh or after a finishing stone. It is fun stuff to play around with. I am working on doing a little more with it, but can't talk about that now............

    Have fun,

    Lynn

I found no mention of cerium oxide on his site.

I apologize for the post on the cerium oxide in reagrds to the whipped dog site, it was Chromium Oxide instead. I apologize for any misunderstanding.

Thanks for the heads up Utopian.

Lynn do you know what the grit size the yellowstone is?? i'm trying to find out the same with other polishing compounds the cerium seems to be fine and smooth the most i've done is 20 lapps with a shaving sharp razor it made it sharper but didn't seem much smoother than the stone i used it needs more experimenting

Last night i honed up a 13/16 griffon and test shaved, it was sharp but a little harsh. So i gave it 35 laps on the 827 Ill. russian strop with ce-ox, i use to do 15 laps, but saw no results. So after the 35 on ce-ox then 45 linnen 100 leather she was right there, smoooooooth. I got my ce-ox from gssixgun AKA Glen.

I'm thinking in the .3 micron area. The difference is small, but you can feel it. Same with the other pastes and sprays. I can tell more in the glide or smoothness than any big or discernible sharpness increase. On some razors though, it can be very noticeable.
