'Just a 'kudo' for asking here and doing all the reading you can. I've shaved w/ my own edges for about a year, but I'm not worth a darn with sharpening knives by hand.

Click the Wiki and dive in. There is great stuff there. That's kind of our reference library; the threads are more the ongoing murmuring of the library patrons.

Start slow, on the easy planes of your face (sideburns and cheeks). Use your current technique on the tricker bits (chin, jawline, flanking the adams apple) and expand your straight razor range as you get more comfortable. If you need to shave to get out the door, use the straight on your days off. It's not about a fast shave, it's about a good shave and for many of us, the most indulgent, selfish, meditative dozens of minutes of our days.

    Best wishes and happy shaving.

BTW, I bought a razor from Pinklather a few months ago and he is a marvellous honer.
