Thread: Has anyone used diamond powder for light honing & stropping - Diamond Powder 0-1/2 μm

Hey guys,

Has anyone purchased\tried diamond powder rather then getting the premixed compounds??

As you can use powdered CrOx either dry or mix it yourself i cant see why you couldn't use this?

At $50usd and $2.50usd postage for 100 carat's it would be a cheap alternative...

I know of one guy who does and uses it regularly. He sharpens entirely on strops charged with a progression of diamond grits. He made me a series of diamond "pastes" (for lack of a better word), I still haven't used them. He also happens to cut stones as a hobby and had the powder for that purpose.
Having not tried it I cannot attest for the edges.

Yes, it's intended use is for polishing very hard materials. Is there some advantage performance wise over pastes?

There is no reason not to but the premixed spray
is easy to apply and easy to get the right amount.

Like any fine powder do not inhale.

You can mix small amounts with water, oil or any
carrier that matches your use. If we were neighbors
I would split a purchase with you. 0.5 micron
diamond is a nice grit size... for pasting strops.

lol i will try not to inhale it, i was actually thinking that would not be good stuff to get in your lungs as its not like its going to break down too well!

I ended up purchasing it and will put an update on here once i get it.

For convenience I use the SRD 0.5 & 0.25 micron diamond sprays using my Spyderco UF stone as a substrate.

I often wondered about using diamond powder on leather stops

I believe that Lynn posted something to the effect that after honing, he does roughly 5 laps on a hanging felt strop with .5 diamond spray and then strops on plain leather. Then sends the newly honed razor to its owner. Correct me if this is not so.

I believe that is correct and i too use the diamond spray but like you said that's spray, not powder.

The powered is $7.50USD per 15ct ($50 for 100ct). The spray is a little under $23USD. So this is more about the method of using the powered and if its worth mixing it yourself etc for the price.

I have 100ct's on order and will put an update on here once i get it so people can have the choice to get the pre-made spray or the powder. (if its any good)

I have used this diamond powder before and found that like any powder dissolving it in some hoppe's number 9 gun oil made it real easy to apply to a strop. The paste also seems to give you a nice edge on your blade. I don't use it very often though as I am partial to the edge I get from dovo black.

Though I will say you will be passing that much of the powder on to your great grand kids probably. I got 10 cts of it and have more then I will probably ever use.

There is nothing like an evenly distributed diamond spray which is suspended in alchohol and that is how it is sold. Again, the medium, whether it be diamond or anyother substance must be evenly distributed to be totally effective.

My message is do not make your own medium, buy the alchohol medium and let the good times roll. Two or three pump sprays on my hanging felt strop and I am way ahead of the game. I do not have to worry about large clumps of diamond crystals destroying my already good edge. Stop defeating your purpose and use the highly recommended mixture. Diamond spray in an alchohol base. Shake well and sleep well.!!!
