    Default Rockwell Strop

    Hi Guys,

This shaving business is all pretty confusing. I know many of you regard Rockwell razors as being terrible but no one has comented on the strops. Are they any good? They are nice and cheap and appear to be genuine leather.

This is what I had in mind

what do you think? Will it do the job?

The leather is too narrow. I know that b/c I bought one of these sets before I knew about the SRP. They're too short, too narrow and the main drawback is that the leather is too hard. Wouldn't make a good strop by any means. Forget about it and get one from Tony M.

OK, looks like I am going to have to bite the bullet and get a decent strop and hone.

I can't beleive I am going to actually pay that much for a STONE though I guess my face will thank me for it though

    Thanks for all the help

You have to realize that these STONES aren't just any rocks you pick up at a beach. They are either rare natural stones with particularly fine particles or when manufactured, they have to mix abrasive particles of a certain size with a bonding agent and bake in a kiln, which is an expensive process. Some stones even come with diamond abrasive particles.

I also had one. I wouldn't buy another one, but mine was serviceable for nearly a year. It was annoyingly short... but the narrowness didn't bother me. I conditioned mine real well and then it softened and had a nice draw. I never used the suede side. Eventually the glue holding the smooth and suede pieces of leather let loose and it became unusable. My advice is spend the extra money and get something a little better. If you truly can't afford it, buy a piece of leather and make your own, or contact the various strop vendors here and ask if they have any "seconds"... they're often willing to make you a good deal on them.

Personally I use a cheap e-bay strop. It works for me. When it falls completely apart I might get one from Tony but untill then I'll just stick with what works.

A good stone needn't be expensive. This one is 18 euros, they ship overseas.
Got mine in a week, UK may last a bit longer. I think it is a great stone.

When it comes to the rockwell strop, you need to pressure-cook it in a cooker full of meat tenderizer for 3 hours to make it soft enough to strop with lol. As for the Thuringers, they could be a decent option for Europe and the UK, but they're prohibitive for Canada as they cost 20.somethingEUR to ship here. It's a bit better for the States as they cost 12EUR

    Ilija,
They quoted me 18 Euro to the US just a week ago!

I should have some very similar Thuringens available, here in the US in early October. I have samples now being tested by a rabbi friend who demands and edge even better than we do. Results soon.
