Well as you know newsprint is on the rough side as far as paper and im thinking that the 4 color inks act as a paste so therefore
you gain smoothness just my 2 cents........

I did another razor last night using colored newsprint, it just started to pull a little, 5 passes crox, 100 newsprint 30 linen,
75 leather test shave smooth, and that was a totally different razor sheffield, the other was a pyramid, it works pretty well to touch up for sure without getting all the hones out......

One THOUSAND newsprint? Or 100? @ 1000 I'd get out the Shapton 16k and do 10 laps, then strop as normal (30/70), then strop again (30/70) pre shave. For me, that would be easier...

I can't claim any major honing experience which is maybe why I also do a lot more stropping on a newly honed blade than I use in my normal shaving routine (about 50 passes).

I finish hone on a Thuringian then (using a Dovo strop) give it 50 passes on the linen followed by about 100 passes on clean leather.

And that is all that matters!

By saying it makes you happy, you mean you like the edge and the shave and that what we are all after, different methods
    for different people.

Stropping is king, honing is queen! Normally my razors don't require as much stropping between shaves as they do right after honing, especially after a progression honing from a bevel set
