    Thanks!

I have probably watched one by AFDavis 100 times...he definitely appears to know what he's doing.

And quite the sharp red chemise and tie if I do say so myself...

Is he one of the members here?

To get a good shaving experience, one must start with a good quality razor and a competent initial honing and stropping. If money is an issue, consider a vintage used razor with maintenance kit from Whipped Dog. It may not be pretty, but will be of good quality and competently honed and stropped before shipment. Shave with the razor before trying to strop it. You will then know what a shave ready straight feels like. You will also know whether your initial stropping efforts for subsequent shaves are successful at maintaining the shave ready edge. One could also buy a honed and stropped (shave ready) new razor at greater cost.

You know, I am a member of a few forums online and am used to the greetings and 'welcome to the forum' posts. They're customary and nice.

This forum goes above and beyond that expectation.

A few days ago a member, who asked me to not reveal his name, messaged me after learning that I was having difficulty stropping/honing my razor.

He offered to sharpen it for me for free if I ship it to him. That gesture alone was surprising to me. It was very generous and I didn't know what to say. I told him that I would accept except that I had just learned that I purchased a cheap and useless Pakistani razor, but I appreciated his offer anyways.

His response was even more surprising.

He offered to ship me a usable (though maybe not pretty) razor, pre honed, for my use, on one condition: that once I purchase another razor I pass this one on to someone else who is trying to get started.

He asked that I make sure that everyone know that 'the spirit of giving is alive and well' at straightrazorplace.com.

This member is a vendor on this site, though I will respect his wish that I not mention his name.

I would like to publicly express my appreciation to him and also to express my gratitude for this forum.

I am excited to be part of a community of such high class, charitable individuals.

If you go into the 'members services' area of the classifieds on this site you can find many experienced members who offer honing services and can get your razor shave ready for a reasonable price. I would start there.

Agree. If the sharpening job was botched, take it to one of our members here. Ask him to tell you what kind of shape he found the razor and what he did to correct it.
