my favourite are the two bench strops i made from 4mm English natural vegetable pit tanned leather a 1/2 piece of hardwood 3 inches wide and 24 inches long i love the length of draw i get from this strop, it's a pleasure to use, and so easy as well, i also have 4 pieces of sticky velcro attched to the table and the strop so it stays where it's suppose to, but quite easily removed for storage.

Nowadays my favorite method is passing my hand over the leather ~15 times to warm it up, 30 passes with the razor, then I lather up and do another 20 - 40 passes I go by razor feel when it's really smooth I do a few slow passes to really dial it in, then I wipe off the lather hot towel and then re-lather up and shave. I also like doing about 10 passes when I'm done but sometimes I forget to.
Oh yeh almost forgot I use a 3 inch wide bench strop, works really well.Last edited by macinnisl; 07-27-2012 at 02:06 AM. Reason: adding strop info

I do a few on linen or cotton (depending on the strop I'm using) and then a few more on leather before I shave, and a few on linen/cotton after. I don't hone very often, but when I do I a whole bunch on linen/cotton and another whole bunch on leather. Not too many, though.
If I had to quantify I'd venture a guess of 10-15 on linen/cotton and maybe 20-25 on leather for a shave and around 40-50 each for an after hone stropping session. Once I read a post here that someone used different tension on the strop depending on what part of the face they were shaving, and I tried that mid-shave stropping thing, but I didn't feel a difference - although that's due most likely to my lack of skill shaving and stropping.

Almost always 60 laps on 2.5" latigo. If I'm in a big hurry, which is quite rare, 0 to 20 laps.
2 to 10 laps after the shave to help dry the edge.

Thanked: 1650 on cotton and 100 on leather. Perhaps more than necessary but I enjoy stropping.

Normaly in the morning when I am sitting eating my cereals I do 50 laps on my thigh, once cereal is finished I stand and do a final 10 on my buttocks.
Works for me.

I seem to do more and more stropping really.
Before shaving, I will do 40 laps on linen, then 60 on leather.
In addition to that, I will do a 20 linen, 40 leather after each shave.
Every once in a while I will do about 15 laps on a English Bridle that I have sprayed with some CBN 0.125 micron.
Before I sprayed it, I sanded the strop with some 400 grit sandpaper.
That will bring the edge right back to super sharp again.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....
