    Default Help

I have honed my stainless steel dovo on 4000,8000,12000 stones used chromium oxide paste on balsa wood and stropped it. It still does not seem sharp enough. What should I do now. I used the pyramid techniques. Even used it 8000,12000. Please help.

Have you successfully honed a razor before?

What were the results of various honing tests coming off each stone? Taking it to 30k will nothing but polish a crappy edge if the work was not done and the lower levels

I stopped using CrOx paste recently to test out my edges with some shaves off of 8k and 12k cause it seems that the paste is actually taking my razors to far and seem to dull them if that makes any sense. lol As mentioned above might have moved to finer stones before should have. I am nowhere as experienced as most of the other people on this forum though.

Yes, this time I stropped it with just the leather and not the canvas. Maybe I have just been reading too much info and was wantig to improve myself this time. I just now did 60 strokes on the 12,000 grit stone, 10 strokes on the balsa wood with 60,000 grit chromium oxide paste. I then stropped 60 times with the canvas and 120 on the leather strop. I think this may have corrected the problem. There are so many different opinions and I opted out on using the canvas before the leather and I feel that was the problem.Any extra tips would be appreciated.

I hate it when I can't grow a beard fast enough to test out a razor.

I just got finished shaving. The best ever. I have come to the conclusion that a tough beard, reading too much information and trying different things created the issues. I went back and stropped 60 more passed on the leather strop, used shavesaver oil (5 drops), applied glycerine to my face and shaved as usual and adding a dollop of cream to my shave soap along with glycerine produced the results I was looking for. Thanks for the replys!

Try skipping the 12k and use the 8k as your finish hone. You should be able to shave after each stone in your progression including the 1k. I honed a Tonsorial Gem yesterday for one of the members and shave tested immediately after setting the bevel with a Chosera 1k.

Whatever hone you are using, play it as a finisher for the last 10 or 15 strokes. This should help to bring the edge to max sharpness, especially when you get to the 8k.

Thanks, I have also found the stainless blade needs extra on the strop. It has greatly improved the sharpness level the past few days. Sometimes "You can't see the forrest for the trees"

    Well:

When I start honning some years ago I was in the same position. In my particular senario was that I was not puting the right preassure on the razor. In other words I took the non preassure statement to serously and I was not doing the job. Check on that puting a little preassure eventhly on the razor and see using the 12k, If you see some difference then try the others stones with less preassure.

I'm say this from my personal experience.
