I always thought that stropping not only realigned the fragile edge but also "cleaned" the edge after doing a few laps post shave. Honestly I don't care either way, I just enjoy doing it lol

After reading thousands of posts here for 4 years, I still don't know the details of what stropping actually does, only that my razor performs better when I strop. However, I have been able to experimentally rule out any connection between stropping and beard preparation

Oh I almost forgot the all important YMMV IIRC IMHO!
