All I have ever used is contact cement and glued the leather to a 2x4. I use a hand plane to smooth out the edges and stuff.
I dream of a world where a chicken can cross a road without having it's motives questioned.

I used contact cement spray, it's fun, everything in the room gets sticky!
Next time I'll stick with carpet tape!

When I was a pro carpet installer we would use contact cement for that sort of job. The kind you spread on, not spray. Buy as small a container as you can if you go that way. The stuff solidifies in the can/bottle if it isn't used for awhile. Even when sealed tight.

When you open the can and it feels like someone kicked you in the face you know it's good.
If it's environmentally friendly I would stay away from it!

Thanked: 599I recently cut four 12" x 3" sections of hard wool felt, to use as bench hones; my intent was to paste/spray each one, then glue it to a thick, heavy base. But I didn't do that (the glue part). Instead, I place the one I'm going to use on top of a wooden cribbage board, and stroke away -- I find that working with a light stroke doesn't cause the blade to drag the felt out of position. In the end, it's easier to wrap each piece of pasted felt in paper towelling, and then put all of them into a larger Ziploc freezer bag, for storage (but not in the freezer!). What do I need with the extra weight or expense of a dedicated base for each one, the glue, etc.? Just my 2¢ (instead of $20).
