Ok so I've had two shaves with a straight razor and still don't have a strop yet. Can't justify buying one right now with baby due in a week. But I do have an unused Martin&co guitar strap that came with my flat top. I'm thinking it's real leather but I'm not 100percent. Here pictures, if it is real leather will it work as a strop and which side should I use?
I can't say 100%, but if it's a Martin I'd say it has to be quality :tu . It should work fine.
BTW, do you have a Martin guitar to go with the strap?

I imagine it will work just fine using the top side (with the printing). Hard to tell texture from pics, but I think pretty much any smooth-ish surface should work fine. People have stropped on jeans, newspaper, palms of hands, seat belts... I'm pretty sure technique trumps material in the world of stropping. So even if it isn't real leather, as long as you use it correctly, I'm sure it will work.
So I'd say go for it.

Yeah man, +1 to the gentlemen above. Even if it's bonded leather, it would probably do until you can afford a "proper" strop.
I'd even bet if you have a nylon strap somewhere (oh, come on... Every guitarist I know has more than one strap! :) ) you could simulate a linen component.
As an aside, I bet your SWMBO is like mine was before my son was born... ready! (My SWMBO even tried bribing him for a whole week with any toy he wanted her to buy)
Sure do. I have a dx 1r flat top, it doesn't sound as good as my dad's 1972 D28 though. The older they get the better they sound.Quote:

Agreed. My mother-in-law has an old Jackson acoustic (not sure of the model) that sounds so incredibly warm. The fact she's got nylon strings on it just makes it sound better as far as a good mellow, rich and warm vibe.
What's sad is that she's been "learning" to play it for the last 20 or 25 years. I think I'm the only one who ever plays it anymore, and I tell you, it's a nice change of pace from my Sammick Greg Bennett 12 string.

12 string? you must be coordinated. I bet it does sound good though, I always liked nylon strings on my peavy bass. They always put off a warm sound.Quote:
