Thread: 1st strop. Big Daddy?

Does it make sense to get the "Big Daddy" 3" strop as a first strop?

Any input would be helpful.

I don't know squat about that particular strop however if I knew then what I do now I would get the cheapest strop that will do the job because the chances are you will damage it. Later down the road you can get something better.

SRD strop, they sell replacement leather and with the screws you can replace it easily. I have srd latigo and roo and big daddy. the SRDs are much nicer.

I was wondering the same thing not long ago... It was down to the Big Daddy or the SRD 3" Black Latigo. I went with the SRD strop and love it. It does cost slightly more, about $25 more, but the way I see it, I've gained at least $25 worth of knowledge from SRP, which SRD is a sponsor of, and I like to support those who support me.

Also, as for being serviceable, the SRD strop is just like the Big Daddy... you can get replacement components for cheap, and it's just a matter of unscrewing and screwing in the chicago screws.

My vote is the SRD strop.

I have 3 strops from Star. 2 big daddy's , 1 black latigo and the other burgundy English bridle but I don't really see a difference other than the color. I had the black first then decided to play with pastes so I ordered the burgundy one and one "OVB" Our Very Best,3 1/2 inch strop in chestnut English bridle and the feel and draw is so much nicer than the other 2 ( which are fine strops "imo"), but it almost feels magnetic when you draw the razor, like it's fluid. Now the black is pasted green, the burgundy pasted red, and the "OVB" bare. I have yellow conditioner but really don't see a need for it. Even if you do "F.I.U. it's cheap and big enough to not care. Thanks for the encouragement. From my reading, it sounds like a lot of strop for the money and rather noob friendly.

Yes. It's a nice strop at a great price. You will probably nick and cut it and they sell replacement leather for $21.95. Once you get your stropping perfected you can consider a more expensive one.

The Big Daddy is a good choice. It was my first 3" strop. I'm not aware of a better value in a 3" strop. Later on you can move up to a nicer strop, if you want. I eventually acquired other strops from SRP, Walking Horse, and Tony Miller. While these other strops are enjoyable, they don't prepare the edge any better than the Big Daddy.
