Thanked: 2027[QUOTE=Substance;1218475]I run a Chestnut English Bridle with felt ( yours looks like the Latigo which is supposed to be 50-60K grit compared to the 80-100k grit of the English)
Substance, where did you find the grit ratings of differant leathers?

[QUOTE=pixelfixed;1218478]Pix, this is from the Star Shaving web site in the strop descriptions
"OVB" OUR VERY BEST LEATHER STROP, With Leather Handle
look int he description for the OVB's they have the extra info in their
The English Bridle Leather has an extra top dressing of tallow that gives approx 90-100,000 grit for one of the best draws for your edge in the industry. The Black Latigo leather gives approx 50-60,000 grit for your stropping needs. There is a 3 1/4" 100% Wool Felt strop attached to the back of the Leather strop.
Note: the OVB's & the Big Daddy are the same leather just no hadle & slightly smaller fore the BD'sLast edited by Substance; 09-30-2013 at 09:12 PM.

I may be way off base here, but attaching grit rating to leather sounds like a marketing ploy designed by the unknowledgeable, targeted towards the less knowledgeable.
It sounds like someone is trying to measure apples with oranges.

not the slightest idea on how it is measured to get these numbers here
but looking at the Latigo photo above my English looks smoother (shinnier in finnish) possibly, I can't comment or make judgement on any grit but as I only have the English BD & a Crown Barbers hone at this stageSaved,

Not a shot against you, I just wouldn't pay it any mind. The only thing you need to "worry" about is draw, and as thebigspendur said above, it doesn't affect performance at all...just personal preference as to what feels better for you.

First off, I love the Rickyism's. It still surprises me when people talk about TPB as most in my area don't know about them.
Secondly, I recently made my own strop. Nothing special just some 3x50" from Tandy and cut to size. To condition it or break it in I popped it in the drier for 30 minutes with no heat. Just let it tumble and bounce around. Then immediately I took some Aussie leather dressing (I believe it has beeswax as the main ingredient) and smeared it on there and let it sit for a while. I then rubbed that off with my palm and got all the residue off. It was quite supple and had a nice draw to it and really probably didn't need any thing else done to it but I decided to put some neetsfoot oil on it too. Now it is a perfect strop with which I spent about 30 bucks total investment on it and actually it made two strops so really thats like 15 bucks a strop and its just as good as anything else in my opinion. So maybe you can do what I did and maybe that will help.

not offences taken here, as a Newb I only bought Big Daddy as it fitted with my budget at the time & the 3" seamed like it may be easier to start on with the option to replace the leather if Nicked wihich it definatley is while i am learning, & then I only got the English as I preffered the Chestnut colour over the Black of the Latigo LOL
