I've always lathered mine but have recently found that a light coat rubbed off within an hour or so works best.

Heavy draw is latigo. Medium is most standard leathers. Shell, bridle etc is light draw.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Hey, T.
Latigo was my daily driver, with a follow up on a lighter draw. Latigo does a good job, but can sometimes get sticky or grabby. Combine that w/ a small blade like a 4/8 and it has often grabbed onto the spine, rotating the blade over and sending the edge into the leather.
I'm using a leather now from a member that seems to have the draw of latigo without the grab. Its been quite satisfying. After that, I'll finish on a light draw leather like horsebutt, shell, or the SRDP1.
FWIW, the diversity of opinion in strops, stropping, etc should be a tip that we don't seem to have our heads entirely around the process. Until that changes - stick with what works well for you and let the herd go where it wants.
