Thread: Split side strops?

Hi again!

I´ve been on the look for a strop for my self for some time. I found that it is virtually impossible for some reason to find 3" strops in the europe, so I will order the strop from the states.
Now I wanted to ask for opinions on the superiorshave's split side strops.

Has anyone used these before, and can someone vouch for them;




I was originally about to buy Straight Razor Designs 3" Premium II Leather Strop but as the sites lack other items (out of stock, without EToA for them) I am about to buy, I am looking for one shop to make my purchases from (Due to shipping costs).

I don't know if it's in the price range you're looking for but Neil Miller makes 3" strops sometimes.

I haven't bought any strops from him personally(yet) but a lot of members here are very happy with the strops he's made them.
He's also a member here and he seems to be a very nice guy from the limited interaction that I've had with him.

He doesn't have any 3" strops in stock at the moment but here's his site.
Hanging Razor Strops

I bought one of these when they first came out and it is an excellent strop. The leather has a nice, suede-like feel to it. The draw is light to light-medium. When I bought mine they were only available with a cotton back strop. The Superior Shave now carries them with your choice of either a cotton or linen back strop.

Learn to use an x stroke,or as some call it sort of like a windshield wiper,on a 3 in strop you will just go up and down as a newb.thinking all is well.
all strops are maliable,they flex they bend,get a 2.5 inch strop,that is what you will get in the long run.
the adege of telling newbs to start with a 3 in. Is B.S,saying they are better for the newb is B.S,JMO

I have 2", 2.5" and 3" strops - I'd suggest 2" or 2.5" and I think some strops are just a little to long. My 2" is about 18" long and works perfectly well for me. the 2.5" is maybe 21" and the 3" is somewhere around there too.
I ran into a cupping problems with the 3" and I believe it helped contribute to the cuts I put in my strop (some of them) and it just doesn't feel right to me. When stropping it feels like somebodies in your personal space, there's just no room to move.

I have the 2 inch version which I ordered directly from Trey. I really like it a lot. I do not like the genuine linen. It is too thin to withstand the rigors of daily use in my opnion.

Possibly... mine has only stropped a few thousand razors over the past couple of years or so and it is looking a bit grubby, distinctly grey you might say.

I guess I'll give it another 2 or 3 years...

I'm w/ Pixelfixed on width. I have several of both sizes & prefer 2.5-2.75" width. Between a 2" or a 3", I'd usually choose a 2", all else being equal.

I think Tony tells ya right about the linen also. I was fortunate to get a length of linen from the other Miller (another wonderful vendor). I was a bit surprised at how thin it was, but it has been more effective than any other fabric material for me, including the nice herringbone weave on the SRD Prem. 1 (seems like best of breed for the cotton fabrics). I've probably only done a few hundred razors on it, but it seems to deliver the goods with no sign of wear.

Mine became frayed at the ends after a bit. Trey was nice enough to send me another piece. The actual medium is great but it did not hold up. Maybe I am pulling it too taught during the stropping session. Who knows?

Or you could be cupping or twisting it which would raise the edge up higher than the rest of it making the edge of your razor scrape. Just a thought. :<0)
