how to clean linen?
Over time the white linen portion of my strop has gotten quite dirty. What should I do to clean it without damaging it? Thanks.

Thanked: 2284I've had great success with and old shave brush and Williams soap. I also used my fingers to get some of the heavy soiled areas. I found an old vintage strop that had a real nice linen strop. It was well used but cleaned up well using this method. The key is to make sure it's flat before it dries. I flattened it on a table and then hung it outside to dry.

I used some basic detergent and plenty of hot water and a scrub brush and elbow grease.I used it on a vintage Red Imp Linen Strop which was very thick and super quality. If you want something gently you can try dreft.

Thanked: 1184I tried spendur's method last year and it worked great. I messed around at first with the be careful soaps and going light. Wisk and a finger scrub brush. Mine was the thick tube type linen and real grubby. The key is to dry it flat and straight. If it dries with wrinkles they will probably stay.

I have had success using a method that Neil Miller mentioned to me some time ago. I use a regular foam carpet cleaner on both sides scrub it in with fairly light pressure let her dry and vacum with a shop vac. When my linens are not to the point that they need a complete cleaning I use an earth magnet it removes a lot of particles. As with everything razor related YMMV. : )
