Thread: Broke my OLD strop, what can I do?

As my name suggest, I am very young and most of what I know about shaving was learn-by-air stuff. I got the concept of stroping and all, but recently I nicked my strop, and only recently I accidently made the cut bigger(almost halfway through the strop.
The strop I am using, which is from 1928-1935(no exact number.) It is a Valet Autostrop VC2. The "Million Dollar Razor" and the strop for it is my concern, since I don't know how to repair it. I would buy another one, but as far as I know, the only way to get that exact kind of strop is on ebay. Which are used and come with another razor.

So can I get it repaired? If so, what will I need to repair it with(I tried glue before, it worked momentarily and then the cut revealed again) and I kinda stripped away some of the leather(on the backside) when I removed the glue. But it would still function if I could seal the cut.

If not, how can I get a new one, if possible?

I really like my autostrop, gives me real nice close shaves, I got 4 razors and only 1 of them is sharp and I don't want to use it until I know my strop is going to work again.

We need to see the problem. Several years ago I helped a 14 yearold with his strop problem. Maybe I can help you but need photos of your strop.......

The first one is the layout of it, the second is the picture of the cut. The other colored stuff is glue, don't worry about it. Just trying to remove it carefully without making a bigger problem. That vertical cut though is what needs fixing, I can sand down the glue so its flat. But that tear/cut...

I hate to say it but there is no fixing that…that strop is dry and worn out RezDog provided you with a link as to where you can purchase a new one, otherwise you'll have to check the Bay and see what you can find. But as you already said, you'd probably have to get a whole other Valet set which is not necessarily a bad thing

Show me a photo of the hardware for the strop. I have some good horsehide and English Bridle leather that might do you a world of good.

Hardware? I got the strop, razors, and the blades. That is about it.

I would check the thickness of any leather used for a replacement Autostrop. In the link it indicates the shell Cordovan leather is about 2mm thick. I have a strop in shell Cordovan and one in bridle leather for my straights and the bridle leather is much thicker than the shell Cordovan.

I managed to snip off the shot part of the strop, it is harder to use but it will tie me over until I get a new one. Thanks for the help guys.
