No it was what in Spanish is known as salitre (I believe the English word for it is saltpeter). Saltpeter is corrosive but can be neutralized easily with an acidic solution (vinegar in this case).

Thanked: 5Really dry leather will not take oil, you will ruin it with neatsfoot, soak it in water oil it then let it dry, the water will pull the oil through.
