That experience is more true for the linen side than the leather. When you scrub the leather, you can remove the gold from the stamp but the impressions will remain of course.

Just for specificity sake, I was using a stiff bristled brush when scrubbing the linen (there was a lot of gunk built up on those things). My cleaning regimen for leather is just saddle soap with a rag, followed by light applications of neatsfoot oil on the back of the strop.
