Bear skin strop?
I recently came across a bear skin strop. I'd never seen one before, and I was wondering on how rare they are and the quality. How much should I be willing to spend on one? Are they worth it? This one looks to be in pretty good condition, I think it'd still be usable. This one's kind of expensive though, and I'm hoping someone will either talk me into it or out of it. :P

Depends on the bear... If it is one that is low in numbers, or killed purely for the skin and not the meat, or hunted for sport only, Id be wanting to talk you out of it.
No shave, no matter how smooth is worth an animals life.
If the skin is a by product of selective culling for the purpose of the better welfare of the bear population as a whole, then Id be very interested in what the strops are like.

It doesn't specify what kind of bear, if just has a picture of a bear and says "bear skin", it's a dark color, almost black.

They have made many novelty strops back in the day. I should know because I collected them and I had a bear. Nothing special and it worked like all others.

IIRC dubl duck had a strop with the image of a bear as the logo ...... I think it was a model 53 ? thebigspendur would know, I'm pretty sure he had one. I don't think it was made with bear skin but I could be wrong. An SRD horsehide is very little draw, premium 1 a bit more, bridle leather a bit more yet and latigo, a lot more IME. Kangaroo is slicker than horse IME. Not sure what bear would be like. Depends on the tanning process I guess.
For me picking a strop, once you know what your preferences are, is more a matter of picking the one with the draw you like than what beast the hide came from. If you're new you won't know until you try, but you'll probably get used to whichever you end up with. As tbs said, they all work.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 3215I’d hold out for the Sasquatch Strop, but that just me…
Seriously unless you are a collector, buy a quality strop with a proven track record of quality for stropping razors.

Thanked: 1184I think the bear picture is on a Russian DD strop. Russia's Bald Eagle is what I thought when I saw it. And if I recall it was broken in shell (horse maybe)
It sounds like you want the bear strop. If so I say get it if you are sure you won't have buyers remorse . It would be cool to have/use something different. Just make sure it's without to many flaws. Your opinion of spending like a nutcase may be different than mine so I will just shut up about that :<0)Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

My strop has Llama written on it but it's horse hide.
