Default Question fro the Aussies about Roo Hides for Strops

Dear Aussie Members-I know that some of you prize your roo strops. I know that I was completely taken by the only one I have ever tried, an SRD model owned by Kevin/Hidestoart. Anyway, as my wife has an Australian friend who is visiting this Christmas, she asked if there is anything she could bring. So my question for you guys are the following:

    1. If I could ask this lady to bring some roo hide for strops (say, enough for 2 or 3), how much/what part of the hide would she need?
    2. What's a good source in Aus for these hides?
    3. What would be my approximate cost in AUS, and US dollars?

I plan to ask Kevin if he would like a comission for another beautiful strop for me, and maybe give him some of the hide too as partial payment.

    Thanks in advance! Aaron

I suggest that you PM SRP members Legion and MickR. They both make primo roo hide strops,
and I'll bet that they can advise you.

Legion makes a nice roll-up travel strop, and MickR made me a very nice full-size 3" strop.

They really are nice strops...very light draw, flexible, and tough as nails.

MickR may also be able to explain any legal ramifications on importing.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

For 2 or 3 strops you really don't need a hide - you'd be better off just getting the individual pieces. But the problem is no one seems to do pieces.

Last time I bought a hide they were going for around 120 AUD for a good quality small one. It's probably higher now.

I have no idea when the exporting issue comes into effect (or came into effect) but you may be better off going with someone who imports to your country rather than having a friend risk customs with a hide rolled up in his bag. I mean, SRD must get theirs that way somehow right?

I tried my local leather shop and he sold it to me in strips cut to size as he also uses it for throngs etc so the hide wasn't whole already. Try for bits running head to tail without blemishes. This is the hard bit as he didn't want to cut it up with scrap bits left over so had to get a bit more than what I wanted to get the bits I did.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed
