Is this worth it?
Hello all,
Going through one of the knife making supply sites and I saw this - http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/produ...oducts_id=2545
Would this work?
Thanks,
Jim

Thanked: 39If it's flat and smooth there is no reason it wouldn't work! With this said, 2" is rather narrow and I'd personally prefer it to be at least 2.5" or even 3" but you'd just have to adjust the x-strokes. The photo doesn't really show the leather clearly, which may mean the quality is not fantastic.
Trying to save money on a strop, I'd go with denim in all honesty. I have a selection of nice leather strops but lately I've just been using one that I made from a pair of jeans - it certainly works well enough.

It's about as basic as you can get. maybe too much so. You would have to see it to tell for sure. It looks kind of like the starter strops Tony Miller used to sell.

Thanks.
I will look into that denim one. I found this link - http://straightrazorpalace.com/strop...nim-strop.html

Why not go to a leather supplier like Tandy and get a nice piece of 22" x 3" and make your own for under 15 bucks ?

I haven't been there in a while but I don't remember them selling pieces around that size. I don't need leather outside of the strop.

Thanked: 39Ah, I'd never seen that guide or I wouls have linked you to it - it's almost exactly what I would have suggested although it hadn't occurred to me to use a bulldog clip. It won't cost you very much at all, I'd certainly recommend making a denim strop over buying the one you linked to.
